International Conference on Multimodality

August 2021,
Valparaíso, Chile

From a sociosemiotic perspective, multimodality has been offering a complex and semiotic-oriented focus in the recent years. This contributes to the consolidation of multimodality as a research field and pays attention to the modes that make meaning. Multimodality states a strong commitment with social transformation, as social and material environments have an effect in shaping communication and the learning processes, thus meaning makers represent what for them are salient features of those contexts. This semiotic work involves a double transformation: it is personal and, at the same time, it is social, starting from the engagement of each meaning maker in the semiotic process.

This conference aims to contribute, on the one hand, to the development of multimodal studies for transformation, in order to elucidate recognition of meanings and invisible meaning makers. On the other hand, we envisage the 10ICOM to be a common space for sharing researchs and consolidate networks regarding multimodality.

For the first time, this international conference will be held in Latin America. We hope that the 10th edition of the ICOM allows its participants to approach meaning making from different theorical-methodological perspectives. This can be achieved making emphasis on recognition of meaning potentials, in the interaction of semiotic modes, in the semiotic mobility, and in semiosis in general, in various social fields.

The 10th International Conference on Multimodality is organized by the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso – Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso- (Research Center for Inclusive Education and School of Education), Latin-American network of Multimodal Studies (REDLEM), and National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). As well, we count on the contribution of the Institute of Literature and Language Sciences (ILCL PUCV), Casa Transparente “Osvaldo ‘Gitano’ Rodríguez”, Fundación Educar para Crecer and the Andres Bello University.
